Deciduous, early flowering large shrub or small tree with 5-petaled, showy, slightly fragrant, white flowers in drooping clusters which appear before the leaves emerge in early spring. Blue-green leaves change to brilliant orange red in fall. Small, reddish-purple fruit attracts birds. These edible berries are sweet and often used in jams, jellies and pies.
